বাংলা ধাতু ‘ছাঁক-’ (ছাঁকা/ছাঁকানো—ছেঁকে পৃথক করা) থেকে ‘ছাঁক’ শব্দটি গঠিত; এর সঙ্গে সংস্কৃত/প্রাকৃতসূত্রে ‘ছাক/ছাঁক’ ধরনের ছাঁকনি-অর্থক শব্দের সম্পর্ক নির্দেশ করা হয়

ছাঁক বলতে সাধারণত ছিদ্রযুক্ত পাত্র/জাল (যেমন ছাঁকনি) বোঝায়, যা দিয়ে চা, দুধ, রস বা ময়দার মতো পদার্থ থেকে অবাঞ্ছিত কণা আলাদা করা হয়; কথ্য ব্যবহারে ‘ছাঁক’ কখনও ‘ছাঁকবার কাজ/প্রক্রিয়া’ অর্থেও আসে
