‘ছদ্ম’ (অর্থ: আচ্ছাদন/গোপন/কৃত্রিম) শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ‘ছদ্ম’ থেকে, এবং ‘পরিচয়’ এসেছে সংস্কৃত ‘পরিচয়’ (পরি+চি ধাতু) থেকে; যুগপৎ অর্থে ‘ছদ্ম পরিচয়’ মানে প্রকৃত পরিচয় আড়াল করে নেওয়া পরিচয়
