দুগ্ধজাত অর্থে বাংলা ‘ছানা’ শব্দটি দুধ জমাট বাঁধানো/ছেঁকে নেওয়ার প্রক্রিয়ার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত দেশজ ব্যবহার; আর ‘বাচ্চা/শাবক’ অর্থে এটি বাংলায় প্রচলিত কথ্য-প্রয়োগ।

Definition

১) দুধে জমাট (ছানা/পনিরের প্রথম ধাপ) বাঁধিয়ে জল ছেঁকে যে নরম, দানাদার দুগ্ধজাত পদার্থ পাওয়া যায়; মিষ্টি তৈরিতে বহুল ব্যবহৃত। ২) প্রাণী, বিশেষত পাখি বা গৃহপালিত প্রাণীর নবজাত বাচ্চা/শাবক।
