Jibed

/dʒaɪbd/

Origin & History

From English “jibe” (attested in senses ‘mock/taunt’ and ‘agree/match’); the nautical sense is an alternative spelling of “gybe”.

Definition

“Jibed” is the past form of “jibe.” It can mean (a) spoke contemptuously or mockingly to someone, (b) matched or agreed with something (as in “jibe with the facts”), or (c) in sailing, made a gybe (changed the sail’s side with the wind behind).
