From funk (earlier meaning a strong smell; later also the music style) + -y; popularized in U.S. English from the mid-20th century, especially via funk music and youth slang.

Funky describes something that feels stylish, bold, and a bit unconventional; it can also describe a musty, stale, or unpleasant smell, and it is used for music influenced by funk with a strong rhythmic groove.
