Origin & History
From Old English flēot (“a place where water flows; estuary, channel”), related to flēotan (“to float”); later influenced by the sense of ‘a group of ships’. The adjective sense ‘swift’ comes from the same root idea of flowing/rapid movement.
यह शब्द पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी flēot से आया है, जिसका अर्थ था “जहाँ पानी बहता है; मुहाना/जल-मार्ग”, और यह flēotan (“तैरना/बहना”) से संबंधित है; बाद में इसका अर्थ ‘जहाज़ों के समूह/बेड़ा’ के रूप में विकसित हुआ। ‘तेज़/फुर्तीला’ वाला विशेषण अर्थ भी ‘बहाव/तीव्र गति’ की मूल अवधारणा से निकला है।
