‘আপেক্ষিকতা’ শব্দটি বাংলা/সংস্কৃতধর্মী ‘আপেক্ষিক’ (সাপেক্ষ, সম্পর্কনির্ভর) + ‘-তা’ (ভাববাচক প্রত্যয়) থেকে গঠিত; ‘আপেক্ষিক’ মূলত ‘অপেক্ষা/আপেক্ষা’ (সাপেক্ষতা/নির্ভরতা বোঝাতে) ধাতুগত ধারণা থেকে বিকশিত এবং আধুনিক পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের প্রসঙ্গে এটি ইংরেজি ‘relativity’ শব্দের পরিভাষা হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত

আপেক্ষিকতা বলতে এমন একটি ধারণা বা নীতি বোঝায় যেখানে কোনো কিছুর মান, সত্যতা বা অর্থ নির্ধারিত হয় অন্য কিছুর তুলনায় বা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট প্রেক্ষাপট/পর্যবেক্ষকের সাপেক্ষে; পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে এটি বিশেষভাবে আইনস্টাইনের বিশেষ ও সাধারণ আপেক্ষিকতা তত্ত্বকে নির্দেশ করে, যেখানে সময়, দূরত্ব ও ভরের মাপ পর্যবেক্ষকের গতি এবং মহাকর্ষক্ষেত্রের উপর নির্ভরশীল
