Formed from non- (“not”) + fluorescence, from French fluorescence (19th c.), ultimately from Latin fluere “to flow” (via the sense of “flowing light”).

Definition
Nonfluorescence is the state in which a substance does not emit visible light after absorbing radiation (commonly ultraviolet); it may absorb energy and release it as heat or by non-radiative processes instead.
