From French fluorescer, based on “fluor-” from Latin fluere (“to flow”), influenced by the mineral fluorite noted for fluorescence.

Definition
To fluoresce means to emit visible light when excited by ultraviolet or other radiation; “fluoresced” describes something that did this in the past.
