From the verb bastardize (earlier bastardise), formed from bastard + -ize; bastard comes via Old French from Medieval Latin bastardus. The sense “to make inferior/impure” developed later from the older sense related to illegitimacy.

Bastardizing means changing something (an idea, tradition, language, design, or product) in a way that makes it less pure, less correct, or less true to the original—often seen as a negative or degrading alteration. It can also historically mean making or declaring someone “illegitimate,” though this sense is less common today and can be offensive.
