यह शब्द ग्रीक मूलों से बने वैज्ञानिक/चिकित्सीय अंग्रेज़ी पद से आया है: andro- (अर्थ: ‘पुरुष’) + -gen (अर्थ: ‘उत्पन्न करने वाला’), यानी ‘पुरुष-लक्षण उत्पन्न करने वाला’ हार्मोन।
Definition
An androgen is a hormone, especially a steroid hormone such as testosterone, that promotes male sexual development (e.g., deeper voice, facial/body hair) and supports reproductive function; smaller amounts are also present and active in females.
एंड्रोजन एक हार्मोन है—विशेषकर टेस्टोस्टेरोन जैसे स्टेरॉइड हार्मोन—जो पुरुषों में लैंगिक विकास (जैसे भारी आवाज़, दाढ़ी/शरीर के बाल) को बढ़ावा देता है और प्रजनन कार्य में सहायता करता है; यह महिलाओं में भी कम मात्रा में पाया जाता है और प्रभावी रहता है।
