Origin & History
Coined in the early 20th century from estrus/oestrus (from Greek oistros ‘gadfly; frenzy; sexual passion’) + -gen ‘producing’ (from Greek -genes), literally ‘producing estrus’.
20वीं शताब्दी के आरंभ में बना शब्द; estrus/oestrus (ग्रीक oistros ‘डंक मारने वाली मक्खी; उन्माद/उत्तेजना; लैंगिक उत्कटता’) + -gen ‘उत्पन्न करने वाला’ (ग्रीक -genes) से, शाब्दिक अर्थ ‘ईस्ट्रस उत्पन्न करने वाला’।
Definition
Estrogen refers to a class of hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol) involved in menstrual-cycle regulation, fertility, pregnancy support, bone health, and the development of traits like breast development; levels naturally vary with age and reproductive stage.
एस्ट्रोजन हार्मोनों का एक वर्ग है (जैसे एस्ट्राडियोल, एस्ट्रोन और एस्ट्रिऑल) जो मासिक धर्म-चक्र के नियमन, प्रजनन क्षमता, गर्भावस्था के समर्थन, हड्डियों के स्वास्थ्य तथा स्तन-विकास जैसी द्वितीयक लैंगिक विशेषताओं के विकास में भूमिका निभाता है; इसके स्तर उम्र और प्रजनन अवस्था के अनुसार स्वाभाविक रूप से बदलते रहते हैं।
