বাংলায় ব্যবহৃত ‘মহক’ শব্দটি হিন্দি/উর্দু ‘महक/مہک’ থেকে গৃহীত; এর মূলার্থ ‘সুগন্ধ/সুবাস ছড়ানো’।

‘মহক’ বলতে সাধারণত মনোরম সুগন্ধ/সুবাসকে বোঝায়; কখনও কখনও কোনো গন্ধের তীব্রতা বা চারদিকে ছড়িয়ে পড়া ঘ্রাণের ভাবও প্রকাশ করে।
