‘জীবিত’ শব্দটি ‘জীব’ (প্রাণ/জীবন) থেকে এবং ‘প্রাণী’ শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ‘প্রাণिन्’ (প্রাণযুক্ত সত্তা) থেকে এসেছে; যৌগিকভাবে ‘জীবন আছে এমন প্রাণী/জীবসত্তা’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত
