বাংলা ক্রিয়া ‘ঘুমানো’ থেকে গঠিত; মূল বিশেষ্য ‘ঘুম’, যার শিকড় সংস্কৃত ‘সুষুপ্তি/স্বপ্ন’ ও প্রাকৃত-আপভ্রংশীয় বিকাশের ধারায় বাংলায় ‘ঘুম’ রূপে প্রতিষ্ঠিত, এরপর ক্রিয়ার চলমান কালের প্রত্যয় ‘-আচ্ছি’ যোগে ‘ঘুমাচ্ছি’
