বাংলা 'চাপ' (চাপ/প্রেশার) শব্দ থেকে 'চাপা' (চাপ দিয়ে নিচে রাখা) এবং সহকারী ক্রিয়া 'দেওয়া' যোগে গঠিত যৌগিক ক্রিয়া; আক্ষরিক ‘চাপ প্রয়োগ করে দেওয়া’ থেকে রূপক অর্থে ‘দমন/গোপন করা’ অর্থ বিস্তৃত হয়েছে
