यह शब्द अंग्रेज़ी में sub- (अर्थ: ‘अधीन/द्वितीयक’) + contract से बना है; 19वीं–20वीं सदी से व्यापार और निर्माण (कंस्ट्रक्शन) के संदर्भों में व्यापक रूप से प्रयोग होने लगा।
Definition
To subcontract means a main contractor hires another company or person to complete a specific part of the work under the main contract, while the main contractor remains responsible to the client.
Subcontract का मतलब है कि मुख्य ठेकेदार (main contractor) मुख्य अनुबंध के तहत काम के किसी विशेष हिस्से को किसी अन्य कंपनी/व्यक्ति (subcontractor) को करने के लिए देता है, जबकि ग्राहक के प्रति अंतिम ज़िम्मेदारी मुख्य ठेकेदार की ही रहती है।
