From French phénol (19th century), from Greek phainō ‘to shine’ (via phainein, used in chemical naming) + -ol (chemical suffix for alcohols).
फ़्रेंच phénol (19वीं शताब्दी) से; ग्रीक phainō ‘चमकना/प्रकाशित होना’ (रासायनिक नामकरण में प्रयुक्त मूल) + -ol (अल्कोहल वर्ग के लिए रासायनिक प्रत्यय) से बना।
Definition
Phenol is an aromatic organic compound with a hydroxyl (–OH) group attached to a benzene ring; it is corrosive and poisonous, and is used as an industrial chemical (e.g., for resins, plastics, pharmaceuticals) and sometimes in disinfectant formulations.
