From Middle English via Old French, ultimately from Latin 'phasianus' and Greek 'phasianos (ornis)' meaning 'bird of the Phasis (river)' (a region associated with the bird).

Definition
A pheasant is a medium-to-large game bird (family Phasianidae), known for long tail feathers and, in many species, brightly colored males; it is often hunted and eaten.
