From French petard, from péter (“to break wind; to explode”), ultimately from Latin peditum (related to ‘to fart’), referring to a device that ‘goes off’ with a bang.

Definition
A petard is a small, hat-shaped explosive charge historically used in warfare or sieges to blow open doors, gates, or walls; by extension it can mean any situation or issue likely to ‘blow up’ suddenly, and sometimes it refers simply to a loud firecracker.
पेटार्ड एक छोटा, टोपी-आकार का विस्फोटक चार्ज है जिसका ऐतिहासिक रूप से युद्ध/घेराबंदी में दरवाज़े, फाटक या दीवार तोड़ने के लिए उपयोग किया जाता था; विस्तार से यह किसी ऐसी बात/स्थिति के लिए भी कहा जाता है जो अचानक ‘फट’ सकती हो, और कभी-कभी इसका अर्थ केवल तेज़ पटाखा भी होता है।
