यह शब्द meteor + -oid (“जैसा/सदृश”) से बना है, जो वैज्ञानिक शब्दों के ढाँचे पर आधारित है; meteor का संबंध यूनानी meteōros (“ऊँचे/वायु में”) से है। यह शब्द 19वीं–20वीं शताब्दी की खगोल-विज्ञान शब्दावली में प्रचलित हुआ।
Definition
A meteoroid is a small piece of rock or metal moving through space, usually smaller than an asteroid. When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere and burns, it is seen as a meteor (a “shooting star”); if any part survives to hit the ground, it becomes a meteorite.
मीटियोरॉइड अंतरिक्ष में घूमने वाला चट्टानी या धात्विक पदार्थ का छोटा टुकड़ा होता है, जो सामान्यतः क्षुद्रग्रह (asteroid) से छोटा होता है। जब मीटियोरॉइड पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में प्रवेश करके जलता है तो उसे उल्का (meteor/“टूटता तारा”) के रूप में देखा जाता है; और यदि उसका कोई भाग बचकर ज़मीन पर गिर जाए तो उसे उल्कापिंड (meteorite) कहते हैं।
