From French météorite, ultimately from Greek meteōros (“high in the air”) + -ite; used for stones believed to fall from the sky.

Definition
A meteorite is a piece of rock or metal from space (a meteoroid) that does not burn up completely in the atmosphere and reaches the Earth’s surface; it is often studied to learn about the early solar system.
