यह समुद्री अंग्रेज़ी शब्द luff से आया है; संभवतः मध्य डच loef/loefzijde (अर्थ: ‘हवा की ओर का भाग’) तथा उससे संबंधित जर्मैनिक शब्दों से, जिनका संबंध ‘हवा की ओर/विंडवर्ड’ दिशा से है।
Definition
In sailing, luffs can mean the forward (windward) edge of a sail (its leading edge). It can also refer to instances/acts of luffing—turning a boat toward the wind so the sails begin to flap, or the sail itself shaking when not trimmed correctly.
नौकायन में luffs का अर्थ पाल का आगे वाला (हवा की ओर) किनारा/अग्र-किनारा हो सकता है। यह ‘लफ़िंग’ की घटनाओं/क्रियाओं के लिए भी प्रयुक्त होता है—जब नाव को हवा की ओर मोड़ा जाता है और पाल फड़फड़ाने लगता है, या जब पाल ठीक से सेट न होने पर स्वयं काँप/फड़फड़ करता है।
