यह शब्द नौकायन के क्रिया-रूप “luff” से बना है, जिसका संबंध मध्य/प्राचीन फ्रेंच के उन रूपों से माना जाता है जो हवा की दिशा (windward) वाली तरफ़ के अर्थ से जुड़े हैं; “luffing” इसका -ing रूप (present participle/gerund) है और क्रेन संचालन में भी एक तकनीकी शब्द के रूप में प्रयुक्त होता है।
Definition
Luffing refers mainly to sailing: when a sail shakes/flaps because it is not trimmed correctly or because the boat turns toward the wind; it can also mean easing a sail so it flaps. In cranes, luffing means changing the vertical angle of the jib/boom to position the load level.
लफिंग मुख्यतः नौकायन से जुड़ा शब्द है: जब पाल सही ढंग से सेट (trim) न होने या नाव के हवा की दिशा (windward) की ओर मुड़ने से पाल फड़फड़ाता/काँपता है; इसका अर्थ पाल को ढीला छोड़कर उसे फड़फड़ाने देना भी हो सकता है। क्रेन में, लफिंग का मतलब जिब/बूम के ऊर्ध्वाधर कोण को बदलकर भार को समतल/सही स्थिति में लाना होता है।
