From Old English lūs, from Proto-Germanic *lūs (related to Dutch luis, German Laus); the insect sense is ancient, and the insulting sense developed later.

Definition
A louse is a tiny, wingless parasite that feeds on blood and lives in hair or on skin (especially on humans and other mammals); in informal speech it can also mean a nasty or contemptible person.
