Probably a shortening/variant of “Gypsy,” historically used for Romani people; the “cheat” sense developed from the ethnic stereotype and is therefore offensive.

Definition
In current English, “gyp” is chiefly used as an ethnic slur for Romani people and is considered highly offensive; it is also used (especially in British school/university contexts) for a junior student who runs errands for a senior (“fag”). As a verb, it can mean to cheat or swindle, but this sense is tied to the slur and is best avoided.
आधुनिक अंग्रेज़ी में “gyp” मुख्यतः रोमा/रोमानी लोगों के लिए एक जातिसूचक गाली के रूप में प्रयोग होता है और अत्यंत आपत्तिजनक माना जाता है; कुछ ब्रिटिश स्कूल/विश्वविद्यालय संदर्भों में यह किसी वरिष्ठ के लिए काम-काज करने वाले कनिष्ठ छात्र/सहायक (“fag”) के लिए भी कहा जाता है। क्रिया के रूप में इसका अर्थ ‘ठगना/धोखा देना’ भी होता है, पर यह अर्थ भी उसी अपमानजनक स्रोत से जुड़ा है, इसलिए इसका प्रयोग टालना चाहिए।
