From Old English guma/gome meaning “palate” or “gum”; later also used for sticky plant exudations, influenced by Latin gummi (from Greek kommi).
यह शब्द पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी guma/gome से आया है, जिसका अर्थ “तालू/मसूड़ा” था; बाद में पेड़ों से निकलने वाले चिपचिपे पदार्थ के लिए भी प्रयोग होने लगा, और लैटिन gummi (जो यूनानी kommi से) के प्रभाव से इसका अर्थ-विस्तार हुआ।

“Gum” most commonly means the soft tissue (gingiva) around the teeth; it can also mean a sticky resin/adhesive substance (like tree gum) or chewing gum.
“गम” का सबसे आम अर्थ दाँतों के चारों ओर और जबड़ों को ढकने वाला नरम ऊतक (मसूड़ा/जिंजाइवा) है; इसका अर्थ चिपचिपा राल/चिपकाने वाला पदार्थ (जैसे पेड़ों की गोंद) या च्यूइंग गम भी हो सकता है।
