From Middle English gout, from Old French gote ‘drop’, from Latin gutta ‘drop’ (based on the old belief that the disease was caused by ‘drops’ of harmful fluid falling into the joints).

Definition
Gout is a very painful type of arthritis, often affecting the big toe, caused by uric acid crystals accumulating in and around a joint. It can also mean a sudden spurt or splotch of liquid (usually ‘a gout of’), and rarely a disease of wheat or cornstalks caused by insect larvae.
