Borrowed from French gouache, ultimately from Italian guazzo (“watercolor, paint”), from guazzare (“to splash”).

Definition
Gouache is a water-based paint that dries to a matte, opaque finish because it contains an added white pigment (often with gum as a binder); the word can also mean an artwork made using this paint.
