From Middle English gille, probably related to Old Norse gil (a narrow ravine) and/or Old French gille, with later specialization to the fish-breathing organ.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी gille से; संभवतः पुरानी नॉर्स gil (संकरी घाटी/दर्रा) और/या पुरानी फ़्रेंच gille से संबंध, और बाद में अर्थ मछलियों के श्वसन-अंग (गलफड़े) के लिए विशिष्ट हो गया।
Definition
Gills are organs that extract oxygen from water in fish and many aquatic animals; they are located on the sides of the head and are protected by gill covers (opercula) in many fish.
