Origin & History
From Middle English gille, from Old Norse gil (a ravine) and/or related Germanic forms; in the sense ‘fish breathing organ’, the word is recorded in English from the early modern period.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी gille से; मूल रूप से पुरानी नॉर्स gil (घाटी/दर्रा) तथा संबंधित जर्मैनिक रूपों से संबद्ध माना जाता है; ‘मछली के श्वसन अंग’ वाले अर्थ में इसका प्रयोग अंग्रेज़ी में प्रारम्भिक आधुनिक काल से मिलता है।
Definition
Gill most commonly means the respiratory organ in fish and other water-dwelling animals that extracts oxygen from water; it can also refer to the gill opening/cover in fish, the thin radial plates under a mushroom cap where spores are produced, or—more rarely—the fleshy hanging skin under a bird’s beak or under the chin.
