Origin & History
From eggplant (18th century), named because some early varieties were white/yellow and egg-shaped; eggplant ultimately relates to the plant name Solanum melongena, via earlier European forms influenced by Arabic and other languages.
‘एगप्लांट’ (18वीं शताब्दी) शब्द का नामकरण इसलिए हुआ क्योंकि कुछ शुरुआती किस्में सफ़ेद/पीली और अंडे जैसी आकृति की थीं; यह शब्द अंततः Solanum melongena (वनस्पति नाम) से जुड़ा है और यूरोप में प्रचलित पुराने रूपों के माध्यम से (अरबी आदि भाषाओं के प्रभाव सहित) विकसित हुआ।

Eggplants are the fruits of Solanum melongena, commonly cooked as a vegetable in many cuisines; they have a spongy flesh and mild, slightly bitter taste that absorbs flavors well.
