Origin & History
From Latin 'dirigere' (to direct/guide), via Late Latin 'director' and French 'directoire'; 'directory' came to mean a guide/list and later a computing folder.
लैटिन 'dirigere' (मार्गदर्शन/दिशा देना) से, लेट लैटिन 'director' और फ़्रेंच 'directoire' के माध्यम से; 'directory' का अर्थ पहले मार्गदर्शिका/सूची हुआ और बाद में कंप्यूटिंग में फ़ोल्डर/डायरेक्टरी के अर्थ में विकसित हुआ।
Definition
Directories are organized lists (e.g., phone/business directories) or, in computing, folders that contain files and subfolders and also represent the structured listing of items on a drive.
'डायरेक्टरीज़' संगठित सूचियाँ (जैसे फोन/व्यावसायिक निर्देशिका) भी होती हैं, और कंप्यूटर में यह ऐसे फ़ोल्डर होते हैं जिनमें फ़ाइलें व उप-फ़ोल्डर रखे जाते हैं; यह ड्राइव पर वस्तुओं की संरचित सूची/व्यवस्था को भी दर्शाता है।
