Definition
A commutator is a segmented ring or cylinder with brushes that switches electrical connections so the current in a rotating coil is reversed at the right moments, enabling steady torque in DC motors or rectified output in generators; in math/quantum mechanics, it is an expression/operator (often [A,B]) indicating how much two operations fail to commute.
