From Middle English bugge (a frightening thing, goblin) + bear; originally meaning a goblin-like creature used to frighten children, later extended to mean an object of fear or persistent worry.

In modern use, a bugbear is something that repeatedly causes trouble or worry, often a particular fear or annoyance; historically it also meant a mythical creature used to scare children.
