From Old English æces (axe), related to Old Norse øx and Proto-Germanic *akwisī; long used in Germanic languages, with modern spelling also influenced by Middle English and French forms.
यह शब्द पुरानी अंग्रेज़ी के æces (axe) से आया है; इसका संबंध पुरानी नॉर्स øx और प्रोटो-जर्मैनिक *akwisī से माना जाता है। जर्मैनिक भाषाओं में यह बहुत पुराने समय से प्रचलित रहा है और आधुनिक वर्तनी पर मध्य अंग्रेज़ी तथा कुछ हद तक फ़्रांसीसी रूपों का भी प्रभाव रहा।
Definition
An axe is a tool with a heavy metal head and a sharp blade used for cutting wood; by extension it can mean an ancient bladed weapon, an informal “dismissal” (to get the axe), or a musician’s instrument (especially a guitar/sax); as a verb it means to chop with an axe or to suddenly end/cut something such as a job, program, or budget.
Axe (कुल्हाड़ी) एक औज़ार है जिसकी भारी धातु की धारदार फाल/ब्लेड लकड़ी काटने के लिए उपयोग होती है; विस्तार से इसका अर्थ प्राचीन धारदार हथियार, बोलचाल में “निकाल देना/छँटनी” (to get the axe), या किसी संगीतकार का वाद्य (खासकर गिटार/सैक्सोफोन) भी हो सकता है; क्रिया के रूप में इसका अर्थ कुल्हाड़ी से काटना या किसी चीज़ (नौकरी/योजना/कार्यक्रम/बजट) को अचानक बंद/कम कर देना है।
