Origin & History
From French arabesque, originally meaning “in the Arabic style,” influenced by Italian arabesco; ultimately from Latin Arabus (“Arab”).

Definition
Ornate, intricate designs made of interlacing lines, scrolling foliage, and geometric patterns, especially in Islamic art and architecture; in ballet, arabesques are extended poses with one leg stretched behind.
