Origin & History
From Greek antipodes (plural of antipous), from anti- ‘opposite’ + pous/pod- ‘foot’, originally meaning people with feet opposite (on the other side of the Earth).
यह शब्द यूनानी antipodes (antipous का बहुवचन) से आया है: anti- ‘विपरीत’ + pous/pod- ‘पैर’; मूल अर्थ था ऐसे लोग जिनके ‘पैर विपरीत दिशा में’ हों, यानी पृथ्वी के दूसरे छोर पर रहने वाले।
Definition
In English, Antipodes can mean (1) places on the exact opposite side of the Earth from a given location, and (2) commonly, Australia and New Zealand as seen from the Northern Hemisphere; it is also used figuratively for something totally opposite.
अंग्रेज़ी में Antipodes का अर्थ (1) किसी स्थान के ठीक पृथ्वी के दूसरे छोर (व्यास के विपरीत) पर स्थित स्थान, और (2) विशेषतः उत्तरी गोलार्ध के दृष्टिकोण से ऑस्ट्रेलिया व न्यूज़ीलैंड होता है; रूपक में इसका अर्थ किसी चीज़ का बिल्कुल उलटा/विपरीत भी होता है।
