Origin & History
From Hindi/Urdu zenānā ‘women’s apartments’, ultimately from Persian zan ‘woman’ (with a formation meaning ‘pertaining to women’).
হিন্দি/উর্দু ‘জেনানা (zenānā)’ অর্থাৎ ‘নারীদের বাসস্থান/অন্তঃপুর’ থেকে; মূল উৎস ফারসি ‘জান/জান্ (zan)’ অর্থ ‘নারী’, সেখান থেকে ‘নারীদের সম্পর্কিত’ অর্থবোধক গঠন।
Definition
Zenana refers to the women’s quarters or inner apartments of a traditional household where women lived separately from men, especially in parts of South Asia under purdah; it can also mean the women of the household collectively.
জেনানা বলতে ঐতিহ্যগত গৃহস্থালির সেই নারীদের নির্দিষ্ট অংশ/অন্তঃপুর বোঝায় যেখানে পুরদার প্রথায় নারীরা পুরুষদের থেকে পৃথকভাবে থাকতেন; প্রসঙ্গভেদে এটি গৃহস্থালির নারীদের সমষ্টিগতভাবেও নির্দেশ করতে পারে।
