understate ক্রিয়া (“তথ্য যতটা জোরালো বলা দরকার তার চেয়ে কম জোরে বলা”) থেকে উদ্ভূত; under- উপসর্গ + state ধাতু/ক্রিয়া মিলিয়ে গঠিত। understatement বিশেষ্যটি আনুমানিক ১৮শ শতকের শেষভাগ থেকে ১৯শ শতকের শুরুর দিকে ব্যবহারে পাওয়া যায়; understatements হলো এর নিয়মিত বহুবচন।

Understatements are remarks that deliberately present something as smaller, less intense, or less significant than it truly is, often for modesty, irony, humor, or rhetorical effect.
