Origin & History
From earlier English dialect use of “tyke” meaning a low-bred person or a mongrel dog; later also used for a child and in the set phrase “Yorkshire tyke.” Ultimately of uncertain origin, recorded from the 18th century.
ইংরেজির পুরোনো/আঞ্চলিক উপভাষায় “tyke” শব্দটি আগে ‘অশিক্ষিত/অভদ্র লোক’ বা ‘মিশ্র জাতের কুকুর’ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হতো; পরে ‘শিশু’ অর্থেও এবং “Yorkshire tyke” স্থির বাক্যাংশে ইয়র্কশায়ারবাসী বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এর চূড়ান্ত উৎস অনিশ্চিত; ১৮শ শতক থেকে নথিভুক্ত।
Definition
“Tykes” is the plural form of “tyke.” It can mean mongrel dogs, or (more commonly in modern use) small children, often implying they are cheeky, lively, or mischievous. In older or regional usage it can also be a mildly insulting term for an uncouth person, a Yorkshire person (“Yorkshire tyke”), or (rare/dated) a Roman Catholic.
“Tykes” হলো “tyke”-এর বহুবচন। এর অর্থ হতে পারে মিশ্র জাতের কুকুর; অথবা (আধুনিক ব্যবহারে বেশি) ছোট বাচ্চারা—প্রায়ই দুষ্টু/চঞ্চল/বেপরোয়া অর্থে। পুরোনো বা আঞ্চলিক ব্যবহারে এটি অশিষ্ট/অসভ্য লোককে তির্যকভাবে বোঝাতে, “Yorkshire tyke” হিসেবে ইয়র্কশায়ারের মানুষকে, এবং (বিরল/সেকেলে) রোমান ক্যাথলিককেও বোঝাতে পারে।
