tide (জোয়ার-ভাটা) + mark (দাগ/চিহ্ন) থেকে গঠিত; tidemark-এর বহুবচন রূপ, প্রথমে জোয়ারের পানি যেখানে পর্যন্ত উঠত তার রেখা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত, পরে অনুরূপ সীমারেখা বা দাগ বোঝাতে অর্থ প্রসারিত হয়েছে।
Definition
Tidemarks are visible lines on a shore (often seaweed, debris, or differently coloured sand) that show where the tide previously reached; the word is also used for any residual mark that shows the limit of a past action, including the ring of scum left in a bathtub after the water drains.
