Definition
A tabernacle can mean a temporary shelter (a hut, tent, or booth). In religious contexts it commonly refers to the portable sacred tent of ancient Israel where God’s presence was believed to dwell; by extension it may mean the Temple in Jerusalem, a portable shrine, or a temporary worship tent. In Roman Catholic usage it is also the ornate box/cupboard where the reserved Eucharist is kept; figuratively it can mean a dwelling place, even the human body as the soul’s temporary home.
ট্যাবারনাকল বলতে অস্থায়ী আশ্রয় (কুটির, তাঁবু বা ছাউনি) বোঝাতে পারে। ধর্মীয় প্রসঙ্গে এটি প্রাচীন ইস্রায়েলের বহনযোগ্য পবিত্র তাম্বুকে বোঝায়, যেখানে ঈশ্বরের উপস্থিতি (শেখিনা) বাস করে বলে বিশ্বাস করা হতো; প্রসারিত অর্থে এটি জেরুজালেমের মন্দির, কোনো বহনযোগ্য মন্দির/শ্রাইন, বা অস্থায়ী উপাসনার তাঁবুও হতে পারে। রোমান ক্যাথলিক ব্যবহারে ইউকারিস্ট সংরক্ষণের অলংকৃত বাক্স/আলমারিকেও ‘ট্যাবারনাকল’ বলা হয়; রূপকভাবে এটি কোনো বাসস্থান—এমনকি আত্মার সাময়িক বাসা হিসেবে মানবদেহ—বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়।
