From the verb “sluice,” related to Middle French *escluse* (“sluice, floodgate”) and ultimately from Latin *exclusa* (“a shutting out; sluice”), from *excludere* (“to shut out”).

Definition
Used to describe water or another liquid being released through a sluice/gate or used to wash something thoroughly; also used more generally for “washed out/washed down,” and in linguistics for the phenomenon where part of a wh-question is elided (sluicing).
