From the verb rice (“to make into rice-like grains” / “to throw rice” / extended senses), ultimately from Middle English via Old French from Italian riso, from Latin oryza, from Greek óryza.

Definition

Ricing can mean pressing cooked food (especially potatoes) through a ricer to create fine, rice-like granules; it can also refer to harvesting wild rice, tossing rice at someone (often in wedding traditions), customizing a computer’s user interface (“ricing” a desktop), or in soap-making, the unwanted formation of hard white granules in the mixture.
