মধ্য ইংরেজি pond(e) থেকে এসেছে; উৎস পুরোনো ইংরেজি pynd (“ঘেরা জায়গা/পাউন্ড”), যেখানে ‘আটকে/ঘেরাও করে রাখা’ ধারণা থেকে ‘পানি আটকে জমা জলাশয়’ অর্থটি গড়ে ওঠে।
Definition
A pond is a small inland area of still water, natural or man‑made, typically smaller than a lake; it can also refer informally to the Atlantic Ocean in the phrase “across the pond,” and as a verb it means to dam water or cause it to collect into a pool.
Pond হলো স্থির পানির একটি ছোট স্থলভাগ-ঘেরা জলাশয়, যা প্রাকৃতিক বা কৃত্রিম হতে পারে এবং সাধারণত হ্রদের চেয়ে ছোট; “across the pond” কথায় অনানুষ্ঠানিকভাবে আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরকেও বোঝায়; আর ক্রিয়া হিসেবে এর অর্থ পানি আটকে দেওয়া (বাঁধ দেওয়া) বা পানি জমে পুকুর/জলাবদ্ধতা তৈরি করা।
