“Notches” is the plural of “notch.” It can mean small V-shaped cuts or indentations made for marking, fitting, or counting; by extension it can mean a level/degree (e.g., louder by a notch); it can also refer to a mountain pass, a tax-schedule discontinuity, or the cut-out at the top of a phone screen for sensors/camera.
