From the verb mordant (to treat with a mordant) + -ing; mordant comes via French from Latin mordēre (“to bite”), referring to the way a mordant helps a dye ‘bite’ into fibre.

Definition
Mordanting is the act or process of treating fibres or textiles with a mordant (often a metal salt such as alum) so that a dye will bind better, last longer, and produce the desired colour; it can also mean to subject materials to a mordant before dyeing.
মর্ড্যান্টিং হলো তন্তু বা বস্ত্রকে মর্ড্যান্ট (প্রায়ই ফিটকিরির মতো ধাতব লবণ) দিয়ে প্রক্রিয়াজাত করার কাজ/প্রক্রিয়া, যাতে রং (ডাই) তন্তুর সঙ্গে ভালোভাবে বন্ধন তৈরি করে, বেশি দিন স্থায়ী হয় এবং কাঙ্ক্ষিত রঙ পাওয়া যায়; ডাইংয়ের আগে উপকরণকে মর্ড্যান্টের প্রভাবে আনা বোঝাতেও এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
