From French mordant (“biting”), from mordre (“to bite”); in textiles and printmaking it refers to agents that ‘bite’ into fibres/surfaces to fix dye or etch.
ফরাসি mordant (‘কামড়ানো/ক্ষয়কারী’) থেকে, যা এসেছে mordre (‘কামড়ানো’) ক্রিয়া থেকে; বস্ত্র ও মুদ্রণশিল্পে এটি এমন পদার্থকে বোঝায় যা আঁশ/পৃষ্ঠে ‘কামড়’ বসিয়ে রং স্থির করে বা এচিং করে।
Definition
Mordants are substances (often metallic salts) that help a dye bond permanently to a fibre by forming a stable complex with the dye; the term can also mean a corrosive chemical used to bite/etch a surface, or a sticky sizing layer used so gold leaf will adhere in gilding.
