mordant শব্দ থেকে—যার উৎস ফরাসি mordant ‘কামড়ানো/দংশনকারী’ (mordre ‘কামড়ানো’ থেকে); রং স্থির করতে রাসায়নিকটি আঁশে ‘কামড়ে’ ধরে—এই ধারণা থেকে নামটি এসেছে। mordanted হলো mordant ক্রিয়ার অতীত/অতীত-কর্তৃবাচ্য রূপ।
